Impact of the Internet in Today's World 

Nowadays, it is hard to imagine anyone not having heard of the term Internet. The role of the Internet in our daily life is becoming very important. The Internet has great effects on Society especially the way people communicate and interact with each other and the way certain tasks are being done. 

It has changed the way we communicate, the way we get information, the way we buy goods, the way we do business and so on. It has also affected the living standard of people. 

The Internet has changed the way people communicate and interact with one another, obtain information and perform certain tasks. With the Internet, a person can send messages using email technology and messengers.

Before the Internet was available, we had to physically move to a letterbox to send our messages. The Internet made it easier for people from different parts of the world to interact with one another. For example, a person who is at Kathmandu can chat with someone in New York. 

People can also meet one another on websites known as social networking sites such as Facebook without really having to see one another personally. 

Before the Internet was available, the only ways to gain knowledge and to get information were to read books, magazines, or a newspaper, watch videos, listen to some audio ete. Today, a person can just visit websites to get any type of information quickly and easily. 


Services of the Internet 

The Internet is a huge collection of computers all over the world. These computers are connected to one another in various ways. Through these connections, we can perform various tasks. Some of the most common services that we can get through the Internet are as follows 

i. WWW

ii. Chatting  

iii. E-mail 

iv. E-Fax 

v. Video Conference 

vi. Telnet 

vii. NewsGroups 

viii. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) 

ix. E-commerce Short descriptions about these services are given below: 


WWW (World Wide Web) 

The term WWW refers to the World Wide Web or simply the Web. It is the most important service provided by the Internet. It was developed in 1989 by Researcher Tim Berners-Lee of the European Particle Physics Lab also known as the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland. So Tim Berners-Lee is also known as the father of WWW. 

It is a system of Internet servers that support specially formatted documents. The documents are formatted in a markup language called HTML (HyperText Markup Language) which also supports links to other documents, as well as graphics, audio and video files. 

The World Wide Web consists of all the public Web sites connected to the Internet worldwide. WWW links the millions of documents just like spider web using HYPERTEXT links. It is making the Internet easy to use for everyone. The World Wide Web is based on the following technologies: 

HTML - Hypertext Markup Language 

HTTP - Hypertext Transfer Protocol 

Web servers and Web browsers


Electronic Mail (E-mail) 

E-mail is an electronic mail, which can be sent from one computer to another computer through the Internet. It is the process of sending and receiving messages electronically through the Internet. E-mail is the most widely used feature of the Internet. E-mail has several advantages over conventional postal services. 

It is free, very fast, reliable and secret. For example, an e-mail message you send to your friend in the USA, will be received within a second but the postal service takes many weeks or a month. Before the E-mail was developed, we had to physically move to a letterbox to send our messages or letters. 


Advantages of E-mail 

i. E-mail is the fastest and cheapest mean of communication. 

ii. It is reliable and secret. 

iii. Single mail can be sent to any person. 

iv. E-mail also supports audio, video, animations, etc. 


E-mail Address 

The E-mail address is also called e-mail ID. It is the location of the personal mailbox on the Internet. Each person has a unique e-mail address on the Internet. An e-mail address has two main parts: User name and Hostname. 

The general format of an e-mail address is: username hostname 

Example: hari@ yahoo.com 

Here, hari is the user name and yahoo.com is the hostname. The bost name is the name of the e-mail server, which is providing e-mail services.


E-mail Fraud 

Sometimes emails from unknown persons or companies may come in your mailbox These mails include various types of opportunities such as "you win the lottery". "you can Cam. money from. bank" etc. This is called e-mail fraud. 


Through these fraud mails,  persons or companies are earning millions of dollars and on the other hand, many people are being a victim. So, Internet users must have knowledge about such fraud mails 


E-fax 

Electronic fax (E-fax) is the generic term, which allows for transferring of fax information to and from E-mail. It is an Internet-based faxing service. Internet faxing has become popular as they help in reducing the costs, 

There's no need for special hardware or software, bulky fax machines or extra phone lines. You just need Internet access, an email address, and an eFax account. 

So the cost of the hardware like an extra fax line, the fax machine, excessive phone bills, ete. can be saved upon the use of eFax. The cost of paper for the traditional fax is also reduced, due to the digital delivery of faxes to the email account. 

There are different Internet fax software used for transmitting the fax. With eFax, any user with an Internet connection can send and receive faxes locally and globally. 

Individuals and companies both use eFax to quickly handle their fax needs. An E-fax file is a fax document sent via email through the eFax service. 

A fax sent to an eFax number will appear as an attachment in the recipient's email and bear the .efx file extension. This type of document requires an e-Fax program to open and read.
